Have you ever sat in a movie theater, and a character appears on screen that makes you cringe? Have you ever seen a movie that mercilessly berates your heritage, your community, and your culture, and people in the audience are laughing at that character?
This shouldn’t be anyone’s reality, but sadly, it’s often the reality of Black women in film. Whether she’s gum poppin’, eye-rolling, lip smackin’, or laying the sex on a bit thick, Black women in film are still combatting these images!
How can we –the audience– change Hollywood’s perception and presentation of Black women in film?
It starts by supporting films that do show whole, human, Black, female characters, whether they’re in Morocco, Switzerland, the Sudan, South Africa, the U.K., the United States, or elsewehere!
That is what the International Black Women’s Film Festival does!
It presents film by and/or featuring Black women in non-stereotypical and non-pornographic roles, while combatting negative images in film, television and media.
We help the public to understand that there are creative and exciting films featuring Black women that don’t result in violence against Black women and don’t reinforce negative stereotypes.
Our festival inspires young women, builds self-esteem, and impacts how Hollywood sees Black women in front of and behind the camera.
We need your help!!
The festival has been operating solely on ticket sales, donations, and promotional gear.
By donating, you are helping the festival to bring you insightful speakers, affirming and creative filmmaking, and, also, helping us to combat the negative stereotyping of Black women in film!
